A contemporary theatrical experience based on Indian Bharatanatyam

When God is a Customer is set to poems from India (1st - 17th centuries A.D.) and China (3rd - 16th centuries A.D.), which articulate the relationship between the devotee and her god in intensely imagined erotic experiences, expressed in bold but also delicately nuanced tones. The god assumes the role of the lover, seen, for the most part, through the eyes of one of his courtesans, mistresses or wives. Their devotional character notwithstanding, one can also read them as simple love poems. However, as one often feels, the devotional component, with it's suggestive ironies, is overshadowed by the emotional and sensual immediacy of the material.
